A fantastic wee spot that is easy to miss – this cafe is hidden down some steps, wedged between a fruit and veg shop and a sauna at the foot of Broughton Street. Inside, there’s a deceptively large space – with a big back room that's good for afternoon tea or birthday parties – where guests can dip into the dressing-up box for hats and costumes while they enjoy towers of homemade cakes, healthy sandwiches and pots of tea. The menu focuses on simple, good quality ingredients, using a lot of additive-free and organic items, so expect freshly pressed apple, cucumber, celery, ginger and lemon detox juice; multicoloured quinoa, mixed bean, radish and alfalfa salad; wholemeal rolls with hot smoked salmon and horseradish crème fraiche, and a table full of cakes, traybakes and biscuits all made in-house. The coffee is from Artisan Roast, your hot chocolate can come plain or jazzed up with organic white lavender, lemongrass, vanilla, cream and marshmallows, and there are a dozen or so teas to choose from, ranging from Chinese Gunpowder, to white peony and Scottish breakfast. The service is warm and takes inspiration from owner Marie Claire Semeraro’s Italian grandmother Angelina, who liked neighbours to drop by, 'drawn in by the amazing aromas coming from her tiny kitchen stove'. Nonna Angelina would be proud.
